"I don't want a sound to pretend that it's a bucket or that it's president or that it's in love with another sound. I just want it to be a sound."
- John Cage.

NEW TOUR: SAW6 - The Track.
SAW6 The Track
We are launching a new tour in two weeks time on Saturday September 30th. SAW6 - The Track.
The tour is partly inspired by a professional crush that's been simmering noisily away (for almost eleven years!) on Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore; partly by Charles Darwin's essayed observations along George 180 years ago as well as the superb work that has popped up along it in recent years. You might also have noticed that Geororge is 'going pedestrian' and the fact that George may well be the oldest pedestrian street in the world might have something to do with it too.

Custom Tours.
SAW CUSTOM ARCHITECTURAL TOURS OF SYDNEY
Last week we completed our youngest ever archi-tour for a rowdy but enthusiastic bunch of third-graders from Gleneaon Steiner school. Really should have pulled out an orange and a knife and done the business on it Utzon style - but the Opera House is probably not the smartest place to pull out a knife; or an orange. This was the best I could find.

Many of you would know our public tour program but we also conduct a private program of architectural tours throughout the year. School groups, professional groups, architects and non-architects alike - If you have a special request, particular interest, professional angle or certain arrangments you need met - or maybe you're just really, really fussy then our Custom Tours might be for you.

For Inspiration only #1
kubrick
Between 1945 and 1950, Stanley Kubrick, aged 17 worked as a staff photographer for LOOK magazine. “In these assignments, Kubrick captured the pathos of ordinary life in a way that belied his young age.” Just a kid from the Bronx, Kubrick was the youngest photographer on the staff of LOOK.

For Inspiration only #2
Nouvel

The locals amongst you would know the 'big tower covered in growies' (forgive a little archi-speak) on Broadway near central Station. Well, big bad baldie and One Central Park architect Jean Nouvel is putting the finishing touches on his bookend project - the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Bookend - as it's a kind of throw back to the project that brought him to prominence in the first place - the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. Our friends at Guiding Architects Paris will give you the low down in Paris and GA-Dubai the once over in Abu Dhabi.

For Inspiration only #3
Opera House Project

"The simplicity of the idea appealed very much to Utzon. It would mean that not only the building's form could be prefabricated from a repetitive geometry, but that a uniform pattern could also be achieved for the tiling of the exterior surface. It was the binding discovery that allowed for the distinctive characteristics of Sydney Opera House to be finally realised. The vaulted arches, the exceptionally beautiful finish of the tiles and the timeless sail-like silhouette of the house all derive from his decision to move the form to a spherical geometry." The Opera House Project.

For Inspiration only #4
Google Cultural Institute

Can't say we agree with everything on here (either we are are or they have been a bit partial) but what an incredible resource for all things SOH. The Google Cultural Institute.

For Inspiration only #5
Magnus

This is gold. 13 year old chess prodigy and G-Star model in waiting Magnus Carlsen playing tournament chess against former world champion Anatoly Karpov (entrée) before moving on to world champion Gary Kasparov (main). Having hammered Karpov, little Magnus gets bored mid-game vs. Kasparov, and goes for a wander leaving Kasparov quietly freaking out as his time ticks away. The ignominy! Chess is just brutal and death is like drowning; silent. As they say, if you're good enough then you're old enough. Watch.

For Inspiration only #6
Elbphilharmonie
Herzog de Meuron are long time faves and along with Peter Zumthor and Valerio Olgiati the reason we get so gushy over Swiss architecture. If they were a rock band they would be Radiohead; always interesting, (almost) every building a winner and every now and then they squeeze out an absolute cracker! Natural History was the book of the noughties and the Elbphilharmonie is our pick for building of the decade! Second best opera house of the last hundred-odd years hands down! Our colleagues at a-tour are all over it if you're heading Hamburg way.
